figure invention homework assignment

Here is one of the homework assignments from my figure invention class. When I was growing up, I did a lot of coffee shop sketching and I got somewhat comfortable with drawing people in natural standing poses, but when it came to action poses (running, punching, etc) I didn't quite have the hang of it. I realized, I was only comfortable with it because I had drawn from life so much, so I started studying video reference for action poses to build that vocabulary in my mind. These are examples from this video.

  1. Good post, Rad. I teach Character Design in Sheridan's Animation program, and I see a lot of similar life sketches from my students of people in relaxed situations, standing around or sitting on the bus, etc. I encourage them to use video for action poses as well, since video can capture a frozen moment of a person running, jumping, or anything else that could not be studied at length in real life. In an upcoming class, I will have them sketching sequential poses from various dance clips from movie musicals, in order to understand rhythmic movement and how it affects what the person is wearing. You might want to try that too.

  3. Your gestures are crazy good and it probably took like a total of 15 seconds to crank that first one out. Awesome, as usual.

  5. Similar problem here, it's easy to just draw what's easy to find (people standing / relaxing). I'm going to do more action study too!

  6. I wish I had the chance to take your classes at the Concept Design Academy but alas I'm in the UK.

So thank you for posting this exercise Rad, I started today and posted the results onto my blog.

    Cheers

  16. This is a great article. It reminded me of an experience I had with an invention that was related to this, something that can generate wealth. I was thinking about inventing a fishing lure that people can use or a wine storage but not sure yet. Love this post though, hope your inventions come out to serve for the greater good.
