Once you have a strong understanding of form and shape design as Karl does, then you can focus on gesture. Gesture is just the flow of things. All the little pieces and details. things like buttons on a shirt or wrinkles all add to the overall flow and gesture. Make sure your details aren't randomly shooting gestures off to other places.

Rad, These are really interesting... and a lot of work for you; thanks!
ReplyDeleteObservation: doesn't the curve of the pilot's back distinguish it as organic. Which makes the propulsion canister more 'plastic.?' Just thinking and typing...
DSM: the reason I would do it would be that I would want a strong pose as he gets ready for takeoff, not a sleepy or watery pose. Also, this is a single image and I would want to make the strongest graphic statement I could make. Straight vs curve. either way, I would make sure the fire shot off with the gesture of the back and all the details were part of the bigger gesures.
