Morning warm up

edit: more sketches:

I'm not one of those people who can just sit down and draw. I feel like I have to relearn how to draw every morning. Normally I would do some copies of artist, but I found this image on Shane Glines' website and it looked like fun.

  1. Hi Rad, it's interesting to hear you feel you have to relearn drawing ever morning. I sometimes feel the same way. Well ok, I always feel like it!

I notice that when you started out with this drawing, you chose to have one nice flow going from the head right down to her right foot that is on the step, adding her left leg on the railing afterwards. I think if I had done the drawing without seeing your method, I would have started with a line flowing from the head, through the body and down the left leg on the railing, doing the other leg second. Is there a method to picking the correct "line of action"? Or is it simply a matter of opinion and hence part of the artistic process of choices?

  2. Andy: you could start either way. I just picked that leg because that's where the weight is. You could move the other leg around and she won't fall over. One of the biggest thing I like to get out of the way is making sure the character is balanced.

  3. I've been trying really hard to pick up and star drawing; boy how difficult it is. looking at your post help me to see your process. why would you do study (tracing almost) rather than just sketch (doodling)?
